First look at Camí des Salinar apartments

Even though local environmentalists have been campaigning to stop the development of even more luxury apartments on the sand dunes of Camí des Salinar, the work has been progressing apace.

Now, the first artist impressions of these new beachside blocks have been released.

They all look rather bland on the outside, but will set you back over a million and a half Euros each.

Viewpoint renamed in honour of Thomas Harris

Local artist and ex-British spy Thomas Harris has been honoured by the Andratx council with the dedication of the dramatic viewpoint on the cliffs of Torre d'Andritxol to his memory.

Thomas died fifty years ago in a car crash on one of the many twisty and dangerous roads of the time near Llucmajor. His work with double-agent Juan Pujol in deceiving the Nazis was a significant contribution to helping the Allies succeed in the Battle of Normandy.

A Wedding Belle - Saturday, June 21st. 2014

John and Lesley were having a drink by the sea on Saturday, June 21st. when a 'just married' couple strolled by.

As there was no photographer with the bride and groom, they snapped these shots and hope if anyone here knows the happy duo, that they may get to see them online.

Do let us know if they do.

Walking around Camp de Mar? There's an App for that.

Smartphones have made life a lot easier in many ways and now the walking routes around Camp de Mar have been digitized to assist the intrepid.

The local council has issued the following downloadable guides for users of iPhone, Android, and Windows phones:

  • Camp de Mar < > Andratx
  • Camp de Mar < > Paguera
  • Camp de Mar < > Port Andratx
  • Camp de Mar < > Torre cap Andritxol

By using the phone's built-in location sensor, the guide displays a map - both standard and satellite - showing the best routes, and information about places along the way.

Very handy!

Resort Update coming soon

We have just returned from Camp de Mar and will be bringing you in-depth news about the resort soon. In the meantime, you may like to know that:

The Andratx Market Special Bus is now the 811. It runs Wednesday mornings from Palmanova via Magaluf, Santa Ponça, and Paguera, to Andtatx. Expect it to be full when it pulls into Camp de Mar.

The Camp de Mar ice cream cafe above the supermarket at the back of the Playa hotel closed in October and will not be reopening.

Likewise, the mini-supermarket on the beach under the Playa hotel was not open last week but could be during peak season - watch this space.

Fernando's car hire has moved, and is now next to Meson el Quijote. His original shop opposite the Playa is under new management and has been revamped. It is also open for car hire and bike rental so do compare prices and haggle if necessary.

Unfortunately, building work on apartment complexes next to the Dorint and the H10 Blue Mar hotels continue apace. Expect noise during working hours.

Spectacular views... of you in the bath!

The multi-million Euro office blocks luxury villa that overlooks the beach of Camp de Mar is, as far as we are aware, still unoccupied.

Could this be due to the architect's open plan design with giant patio doors for every room on every floor, even the bathroom?

To see more pictures of this development, visit myfancyhouse.com, or look out of your room at the Playa and Grand hotels.

Work halted on sand dune development

Andratx City Council has ordered the suspension of the construction of 60 apartments on the dunes of Camp de Mar, even though planning permission had been granted by the City Council in 2004.

An extraordinary meeting of local and Government officials convened to stop building work for three months while archaeological examinations take place.

If the newly discovered structure is to be preserved, then the developer's planned estate could be cancelled.

Outrageous development could go ahead

Plans to construct 11 apartment blocks on land of ecological interest is being strongly opposed by the community in Camp de Mar.

As planning permission had already been granted by a previous administration, the local government is powerless to stop the construction work due to take place on the dunes behind the beach and located between the Playa Camp de Mar and H10 Blue Mar (formerly the Lido Palace) hotels.

The land under threat
Attempts to overturn the permit have failed, although the developer has requested 34 million Euros in compensation from the Council if they want them stop the project going ahead.

From this figure you can guess that each apartment is expected to be on the market for around half a million Euros each - and possibly joining the scores of other existing empty properties around the area.

Only an unfavourable report by the Director General of Water Resources of the Balearic Government might put paid to the destruction of this unique habitat for thistles and the sea lily.

2.8 million Euro upgrade for local sewage works

There was good news for residents and visitors to Camp de Mar this week when the Lorenzo Gutierrez - the Minister of Environment - and the mayor of Andratx - Llorenç Suau - signed a deal to comprehensively reform sewage treatment in Camp de Mar.

Work is expected to begin in the Summer that will enable the plant to treat 70% more effluent in order to cope with a population of around 8,000 people.
